Risk-informed assessment and supervision of defendants released pending trial — supporting court appearances and public safety.
Pretrial Services assists the court in making informed bail and release decisions and supervises individuals released while their cases are pending. The unit balances the presumption of innocence and the goal of releasing eligible defendants with the court’s responsibility to ensure court appearances and protect public safety.
Pretrial staff gather background information and, where appropriate, use a validated assessment to help the court evaluate a defendant’s likelihood of returning to court and of remaining law-abiding. Staff may recommend release conditions designed to address any identified risks.
When the court releases a defendant on pretrial supervision, it may impose conditions such as:
Pretrial Services connects defendants with substance use and mental-health resources where appropriate. If a defendant violates the conditions of release, staff report the violation to the court, which may modify the conditions or revoke pretrial release.
Conditions of pretrial release are set by the court in each case and are stated in the release order. You receive a copy when you are released, and the order is filed with the Clerk of Courts as part of the case record.
