Service to the Court

Juror Information

Thank you for your service. Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our justice system, and your participation is essential to making it work.

Juror Reporting Status

Always confirm before you travel to the courthouse. Trials settle or are continued, often at short notice, and when that happens jurors are not required to report.

How to check

You must call the juror hotline at (740) 992-4636 after 4:30 p.m. the night before your scheduled trial date. A recorded message will tell you whether the case you have been called for is going ahead.

This is a dedicated jury line, not the court’s main number. It is the same number printed on your summons.

Your Summons

If you have received a jury summons in the mail, you have been selected at random from the voter registration list and/or licensed drivers list of Meigs County. Jury service is a vital civic responsibility.

Please read your summons carefully. It contains your Juror Number, the date you are scheduled to begin your service, and important preliminary instructions.

Next Step: Complete Your Questionnaire

Complete the Juror Qualification Questionnaire within 5 days of receiving your summons and return it by email, mail, or in person (see Excusal & Postponement below).

What to Expect

Arrival & Hours

Normal court hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please arrive promptly by the time listed on your reporting message. Delays affect the entire court schedule.

Security

All visitors must pass through a security screening. Weapons, sharp objects, and recording devices are strictly prohibited in the courthouse.

Attire

Business casual attire is appropriate. Shorts, tank tops, hats, and clothing with offensive wording are not permitted in the courtroom.

Compensation

Jurors are compensated at the statutory rate set by Ohio law, processed at the conclusion of your term.

Excusal & Postponement

Jury service is required unless you have a valid statutory excuse. You may be excused for any of the following reasons:

  • You are over the age of 75 and wish to be excused for age. You are welcome to serve after 74, but you are eligible to be excused.
  • You have a medical excuse from your doctor.
  • You have moved out of Meigs County.
  • You have verified scheduled vacation or travel plans.

Without a valid statutory excuse you are required to attend and serve. Failing to honor your summons may result in a finding of contempt, and a warrant may be issued for your arrest.

What to send

Qualification questionnaire (PDF)

A copy is mailed to you with your summons. Download a replacement here if you need one.

Excuse request

There is no form. Send a written request naming which reason above applies, with your full name and the juror number and service date from your summons. Attach your doctor’s note if you are asking for a medical excuse.

How to submit

Send your request before your service date by one of the following methods:

  • Email the jury commissioners at meigsjurycommissioners@gmail.com
  • Fax to (740) 992-3828
  • Mail or deliver in person to the Meigs County Courthouse, 100 East Second Street, Third Floor, Room 302, Pomeroy, OH 45769

The court is working on a way to send excuse requests directly from this website. Until then, please use one of the methods above.
